As news anchor and executive producer for Noticias Univision Nueva Inglaterra, Sindy Espinoza is one of the most recognizable faces within Boston’s Latino community. She can be seen each night on the air delivering the news crucial to the community often overlooked by mainstream English language news operations in the city. However, her connection to the Latino community makes her a key source of information and focus on issues most important to the community.

“I grew up in Miami after my mom decided to move to the U.S. from Venezuela when I was eight,” said Espinoza. “I lived there most of my life until I decided I wanted to go to a good journalism school because it had always been my dream. So, I ended up going to Emerson College in Boston.”

During her time at Emerson, Espinoza was the executive producer for various segments on the college TV station WEBN while completing an internship at Channel 5 WCVB. After graduation, Espinoza briefly returned to Miami but came back to Boston after getting a call from anchor Sara Suarez of Univision Boston for a job as a producer in 2012. After Suarez took a position in Washington, DC, Espinoza was promoted to the anchor chair while overseeing the day-to-day news gathering and operations.

“Sara is a great journalist and was a great boss,” said Espinoza, “so, I got to learn a lot from her in the years that I worked with her. I think I was prepared for the job, but I also learned a lot along the way.”

Being an integral source of information for the Latino community is something Espinoza takes very seriously and is honored to convey.

“Univision is very community oriented and I love telling people about free clinics for citizenship or free English classes,” said Espinoza. “A lot of times people will call us back because of these stories for more information and I know people are watching. Its always good to know that people are being benefitted by what we tell them every night.”
